Arizona's 2 senators join fight over international sewer line

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now)- As we get closer to the monsoon rains, the international sewage line that runs under the border, through Nogales is once again a concern.

Now Arizona's two senators are demanding action to deal with the pipeline, called the International Outfall Interceptor (IOI).

The IOI runs under the border, just west of the Morley Gate Port of Entry at Nogales.

It carries raw sewage from Mexico into Nogales, Arizona.

Now the long-brewing issue over it might finally be solved because a of the senators' letter.

We've seen what happens when the sewage line from Mexico to the United States is overwhelmed.

Contaminated water flows north, over the border, causing huge headaches for the city of Nogales.

It happens regularly.

Everyone agrees, the line that runs under the Nogales Wash through the heart of the city needs upgrades, rehabilitation.

But roadblocks have backed things up.

Officials hope database will help ID remains, provide closure

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- People can now use a searchable mapping system to find out where border crossers have died in the Pima County desert.

This is a major effort with the county medical examiner's office and the non-profit group Humane Borders.  It is expected to be the biggest, most complete database on border deaths in the area.

It has information on the 2,000 migrant deaths recorded in the past 12 years, with each of those mapped out over the Pima County desert.

The database is searchable by cause of death, the year and gender, and can map out how many were found in a specific area.

A number of groups are expected to use this site, from the Border Patrol to Derechos Hermanos; this site is also public and anyone can use it.

Officials hope the site can provide closure for some families and help identify the remains. Of the 2,000 remains found about 500 are still unidentified, officials say.
