Tubac Presidio State Historic Park will participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013.

Area near fire temporarily closed to public

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now)- A portion of the Sierra Vista Ranger District, Coronado National Forest, will be temporarily closed in the vicinity of the Soldier Basin Fire. 

The following are prohibited:

  • Entering or using Soldier Basin Area north to Flux Canyon, as shown on the attached map.
  • Being on Forest Service Road (FSR) 4681, FSR 4698, FSR 4659, FSR 235, FSR 215, FSR 812, and/or FSR 49 and routes therein as shown on the attached map.

The area is temporarily closed to allow for public safety in the Soldier Basin area north to Flux Canyon during emergency fire suppression operations.

The area will remain closed until May 31, or until the order is rescinded, whichever is earlier.

Any violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for individuals, $10,000.00 for organizations and/or imprisonment for not more than six months.

Southern Arizona wildfire now in mop-up stage

NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - Fire managers say a wildfire that has charred close to 11,000 acres of grass and brush on steep and rocky ridges of the Coronado National Forest in southern Arizona is now entering the mop-up stage.

The Soldier Basin fire is some five miles east of the Nogales airport in in Santa Cruz County.

It's reported at 70% containment on Friday after firefighters burned off fuel around the perimeter and within the fire zone.

Forest Service officials say the fire is human-caused and isn't threatening any structures.

The fire began May 17.

It's being fought by about 200 firefighters plus three helicopters, 11 engines and seven water tenders, but managers say they're poised to release some crews.

The Arizona Game and Fish Commission voted unanimously at its May 10 public meeting in Kingman, to support H.R. 687, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act.

The legislation, sponsored by Congressman Paul Gosar and Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick, would bring into federal stewardship more than 5,500 acres of high-priority conservation lands in exchange for 2,600 acres of national forest system land intermingled

Fifty five participants to walk in the 10th annual Migrant Trail

On May 27, a diverse group of fifty five individuals will begin a 75-mile walk to call attention to the human rights crisis occurring on the southern border. The tenth annual Migrant Trail: We Walk for Life is a joint endeavor of community groups and individuals from both sides of the border walking in solidarity with migrants to demand an end to the deaths in the desert.

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Oasis Cinema in Nogales was full of people
who were eager to see how they and their hometown of Nogales looked on the big
screen in The Hangover: Part Three.

"This is my really happy face," said Diana
Arellano, who was an extra during the shooting of the film.

"I came to watch it because it was filmed in
my hometown, and I want to see how it came out," said Ivan Lopez.

They saw Morley Avenue transformed into
Tijuana for the shooting of The Hangover: Part Three, back in October. 
Arellano was at the movie to see if she made it in as an extra.

"I was just at the plaza, just like walking
there," she explained about her assignment for the movie.
