Officials seize more than $3 million in drug busts | News
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Authorities seized more than $3 million worth of marijuana Tuesday in two separate incidents in Southern Arizona.
Douglas Station agents and Hedglin Forward Operation Base agents received reports of suspected narcotics smuggling east of Douglas. Upon arrival to the reported location, agents witnessed two occupants flee from a Chevrolet Sierra pickup truck, according to a news release.
Approximately 1,554 pounds of marijuana were seized from the vehicle and turned over to the DEA. The two absconding suspects were apprehended and may face federal prosecution.
The value of the narcotics is estimated at $777,000, officials said.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, Nogales Station agents discovered an abandoned Ford Econoline a short distance from the border. A search revealed 189 bundles of marijuana, weighing more than 4,600 pounds.
Both the vehicle and the marijuana, valued at approximately $2,300,250, were seized and transported to the Nogales Station for processing.
The total weight of both drug seizures estimates to be more than 6,100 pounds and worth approximately $3.1 million.
