Santa Cruz County courts move to new complex

The following is a news release from Santa Cruz County Superior Court:

The Santa Cruz County Justice of the Peace Number 1 and Superior Court will move to the new Santa Cruz County Justice Center on Wednesday, December 7, 2011.

The new Courthouse is located immediately east of the Santa Cruz County Complex and the new physical address is 2160 North Congress Drive in Nogales.

TUBAC, AZ (KOLD) - Many pockets of Santa Cruz County sit on floodplains, vulnerable to storm water and rising rivers. But now, new mapping indicates that more of the county sits on this type of land than previously thought.

"There have been changes in the system," explained John Hays, floodplain coordinator for Santa Cruz County. "Flood events have occurred over the years that have rearranged the channels."

Nogales Home Tour shows community historical sites

Viewers who take the 2011 Nogales Home Tour on Saturday, Sept. 24 will be able to learn about some historic homes and buildings in the area.

The tour starts out at St. Andrew's Episopal Church, which was built in 1969, according to the Green Valley News.

Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased in Green Valley, Tubac and Nogales:

2 people displaced after Rio Rico house fire

A house fire in Rio Rico displaced a man and a woman Monday afternoon, according to the Red Cross.

The house, which is located in the 1200 block of Avenida Gloriosa, caught fire at about 2:30 p.m.

Historic lookout perishes in wildfire

Flames from the Murphy Complex Fire destroyed the historic lookout at the peak of Mt. Atascosa, west of Rio Rico.

The lookout was built in the 1930's, and was renovated between 1999 and 2001.

It had large windows and a porch.

Hikers sometimes use it to eat lunch and take in the views.

Murphy Complex may threaten endangered species

The estimated cost to fight the Murphy Complex, which includes the Murphy Fire and Pajarita Fire, is now $3 million, according to officials.

The fire is burning on the Nogales District in the Coronado National Forest, about five miles east of Arivaca and four miles west of Tubac, Arizona. The Murphy Complex has burned through 67,051 acres and is 50 percent contained.

Firefighters are trying to keep the fire from burning in the Sycamore Canyon area about six to seven miles from Rio Rico. The canyon is a haven for several endangered species, the news release stated.

Pre-evacuation canceled for parts of Rio Rico

Homes west of I-19 in Rio Rico are out of danger for now, after authorities warned residents Monday they might have to leave because of the Murphy Fire.

The U.S. Forest Service says firefighters conducted a burnout operation to keep flames spreading into Rio Rico.  Crews say the Pajarita Fire merged with the burnout operation at approximately Walker Canyon. 

The Pajarita Fire continues to slowly back to the southwest towards Sycamore Canyon, and fire crews are continuing to fight it.
